My husband and I attended the Aracata show Saturday.  I've been in love with JJ's music for almost 4 years now, but never seen him in concert, despite being from his home town of Jacksonville, FL.  So now that I'm living in NorCal for a bit, and found out he was playing near the redwoods, we decided to bite the bullet and shell out the funds for a nice weekend.

The show was amazing.  JJ was just as I thought he would be, and a great performer, too.  Growing up on the St Johns, and watching the "boonies" developed until they're almost unrecognizable, JJ's music speaks to me on a deep level.  I even had tears in my eyes during a couple songs, like Lochloosa and Brighter Days, 2 of my favorites.  The only thing that put a glitch in our enjoyment was the group of drunk cougars yelling cat calls from stage right, but hey, it takes all kinds I guess.

I was hoping to make it back to Florida to catch JJ at the Rhythym and Ribs Festival, but don't think it's going to happen due to funds.    We definitely plan to get back to Jacksonville this year though, so you can bet I'll be at the Freebird for New Years!

How awesome that your first show was a solo show!!  I am so happy that you enjoyed it, hearing JJ tell awl his stories about what his songs are about, a very intimate show I am sure.  Do you remember what the setlist was?

I find it a true shame that folks behave like that when one would think that they paid to see this performer ......

I dunno .......

Now just wait til you see the whole band!!

Thanks for checking in soulsurvivor. So glad you got to see JJ the first time. A great experience to see him solo for sure. His solo shows are more emotion filled. Wish he was doing another one or 2 down Fla way but sure glad someone from Fla got to see him way out on the W. Coast. How cool.

I agree with Sunny that it's a shame about dicks in the crowd. Never fails. Seems their sentiments are in reverse...they paid to come out and get loud and drunk and the performer was somewhat secondary. Aren't their like bars with house music for them kind of people?

The cougars were the only bad thing about the show.  They kept hootin and hollerin and tellin JJ to take off his clothes.  Of course he took it in stride, but I was there for the music, not the sex symbol.

The fact that it was a solo gig was AMAZING!  And actually, I didn't even realize it was going to be that way before getting there, so that was an awesome surprise!

This may not be in correct order, but these are the songs he sang......

Hide and Seek
Brighter Days
Beautiful World
Orange Blossoms
Slow Hot & Sweaty (he broke a guitar string during this one!)
Tupelo Honey
Lochloosa
I Believe (a request he wasn't prepared for, and he forgot a couple words, lol)
Sweetest Thing
King Hummingbird
Florida
A Woman
By My Side
How Junior Got His Head Put Out

I hope that's a complete list.  I think he also sang Circles, but I had to go find my husband, who had gone out for a smoke and failed to return.  I was afraid he had gotten blocked from coming back in because he was drunk (this has happened once before at another bar).  Turns out he was just trapped in a weird conversation with some potheads outside.  LOL

Oh, and Sunny War was great.  I had no idea who she was or what kind of music to expect, but she was really good.  She won over my husband when she covered a DRI song.  He even bought 2 copies of her CD that was for sale at the show.  Great voice, good guitar player, and very humble personality with a good sense of humor.

And don't worry, we didn't just buy her CD!  My husband bought me the Blackwater, Lochloosa, and Country Ghetto CDs at the show.    Now I have the complete collection!  (except for the new vinyl edition of GW)

Exactly....and RIGHT ON Soulsurvivor Sunny and King Clay MF1,
We were at the Tractor show with some who had seen JJ and Mofro, before, the smallest group of the band was last May,when they toured with George Thorogood, thru Canada, and dropped down from BC, to do one show, here in Seattle.....I was almost appologizing to to new fans, in the Mustang on the way up to the Snoqualmie Casino, as I was trying to explain how much the horns add to the show....I was feeling the need to miss Art and Dennis, but oddly, I was surprised as to how well the show was, it was just different, and still a great show.  It reminds me very much of the email that King Clay shared, the one between he and JJ, about JJ's expectations or lack there of, and what fans and all expect or want on albums or cds....maybe that post could be re-posted for all to see again....it was telling and enlightening too.

What is truly amazing and unique, I believe, about JJ and this band, is the fact that one becomes a fan, and soon is in it deep, it becomes an easy sell to other new fans, in that as one shares with others, about this music, and the perferomance(s), it does not take a lot of bullshit to convince the new listener.  The proof is in the pudding, and after a few short minutes of lisenting to a borrowed cd, the newbie is finding themselves asking for more...in most cases.  The other real beauty, is getting these folks to a show, and doing the as I call it, the "Lizzard Eye", where you have one eye on the stage and the other on your friends.....hell what a sight...enjoyment all around. Side note, the "Lizzard Eyes" works in all types of situations..trust me.  I thought the same thing, that the folks seeing JJ pared down, solo, by himself, first....have nothing to compare it too, so when, not if, but when you newbies, rookies, virgins, and or firstimers, get to see that guttoral, sexy, gritty rawness, all wrapped up with the whole band......oh shit are you gonna go outtta your minds....again, trust me.  This solo gig, was as some of you or maybe leader here told me....you're in for a treat....and we were.

I feel your excitement, it must have been something that you could put a meter on it and read like a technician would have, and for the idiots who think that this is a party or a 14step program, and feel the need to constantly let their butts suck wind, I'm with ya on this one, shut the hell up. On one of JJ's recordings on Archive.org, he talks about the people who bitch when other sing along.....for this guy/band I don't mind that so much, hell his music makes you want to sing, even if you can't.....listen to this recording and you''ll get the message, but as far a dumbasses, who send their friends out for multilpe dirinks....and then sit behind and talk about everything except me doing their old lady, or if she's the one talking, talking about it, man it makes me wanna reach over my shoulder, and grab ahold of something, tightly, and launch it onto the stage. Such was the case at the Tractor, as Sinatra would say...."this broad...." oh man, if it had not been for the fact that I did not want to be the interrupting the show, cause there was no where to hide the shit that would have hit the fan, sitting fortunately, in the front row. This broad...ohdon't get me started.  I know JJ must have seen and heard her stupitiy....and that aint what I was payin' for, almost makes you mbarrassed for the artist, at least the local, cause she's a piss poor representative......oh that's right, she was proud to tell us she was from outta state......anyways....you guys had a great time and finally got to see him, that is WAY COOL

And then I got a birthday present and got a full band show 6 months later. Believe me, neither is an experience you'll never forget!! Congrats and welcome to the front porch!

Thanks for the blog comments!  I'm really not a great cook, but I LOOOOVVVVEEEE to eat!  Thank goodness my husband loves to cook for me.  The only thing I'm good at is new drink recipes!

There was a lady taping Sunny War, but I don't think she stayed to tape JJ.  It's possible though, as I was so mesmerized by his performance, I didn't think to look around once he started.

Man do I feel like a jackass.cause today while returning my friends recorder to to him at work, and he showing me what I needed to do, to get the damn thing rolling correctly....damn I could have given y'all so much more....that was a great show. Hell again and again, while talking to Shelley at work today too, come to find out, that the guy she and Roy know, who is also in a band, sings, went to the casino show with all of us last May, wanted to sse JJ solo as well, and could not get a ticket.....sold out, shit I thought he did not go because of his illness (cancer) and well could not make it.....shit, he lives within range, and after two of our friends bailed out on us, I had two tickets in my pocket.....unused, so I gave them to Brian during the show, since he coolects them.... he said he saw JJ watching that exchange while he smiled at Brian...must have sensed Brian was the dude in need...I dunnno.

I'm gonna be prepared next time....reallly....y
all are worth it.....frickin' fumbler Richard.  Sunny War's TM had somebody with him, a lady with a video camera...taking vids and stills....supposed to go on Sunny's FB or website according to Guillermo...TM
