It was great seeing JJ play a lot of guitar last night and cranking it out with Trube.  One of the best shows we've seen.  Plus we really enjoyed meeting everyone on the board.  Skipperdome is a unique venue.

Saturday night was a blast. The band was on fire, so tight but yet sooo loose. Todd "Smiley" gets MVP for the night in my book. He was so far back in the pocket he was comin around the back and meetin the groove in the middle. So fun to watch him and AC, they were like a rythem section machine.Great crowd too. Was really cool to put so many faces to screen names. It was my pleasure yall. Safe travels!!!

I wasn't able to do that until the end of the second night, and then only a couple people - but the ones that I did meet were awesome!

Hopefully they will come back through to Skippers again later in the year!  If any of the locals know of any good shows in the area until then, let me know!

Well, let's see then...
this Thursday's Galactic @ the Ritz! Zach Deputy @ Skipper's on Feb 11!
Don't know if you ever got a chance to see Nervous Turkey, but if you did, or if you know of Ernie Locke, he's got a new band called the Lambastards.  Their first gig is this Saturday @ Stoney's near Ybor. Unfortunately we will be in Atlanta, but looking forward to catching their next one!

I loved Nervous Turkey! I saw them a few times on their own, as well as opening up for both Mofro and Rev Peyton's Big Damn Band!
I was upset that they weren't around anymore! That's great news on the new band!  I'm booked up on Saturday. But now that I know the name I can keep an eye out. Hopefully they will play the Ringside some time soon. (pretty much across the street from me! )

Thank you!

Great time on Sat night. Good crowd and good setlist. I agree that Darryl played too long, but mainly because I was anxious for JJ to start singing again at Skipper's.

Fair warning that this will be a long read, lol!!

My Florida  M*O*F*R*O Adventure

From the moment I stepped back onto my old stomping grounds, it was a whirlwind tour.  We drove straight from the airport to Mama Maria’s in Tarpon Springs.  That meal was beyond amazing!  I had the special, a whole Hog Nosed Snapper that way beyond what I could have comprehended it would taste like.  Awl I can is a peechure does paint a 1,000 words, so I will let the peechure dew the talking!

And I had a side of grilled calamari that was so succulent and tender and just thinking about it makes my mouth water.  Great little Greek place.

From there we proceeded to my friends house where we played cards.  For the 1st 3.5 hours I won not one hand.  Took a break and jumped on the board for a bit.  Came back to the poker table about 3:00 am and proceeded to win $50 in 45 minutes, now they wanted to go to bed, yeah right!!  I was able to play til about 4:30, then they retired as I did too.  Got up bout 9:00 and took a wonderful stroll through the neighborhood and loved feeling the warm sun shining down as it was a negative 1.6 when I left my holler Friday morning.

On to the “Q”!!!  upon our entrance into the Quality Inn’s lobby the gentleman (who would soon become our hero later in my story) was correct in identifying us as Mofrofans going to Skipper’s!  Giggles and Lil Mofro Ho and I kept on texting each other as to our whereabouts til we arrived.  Upon arrival, I left Gregg at the room and went just around the corner to their room and Giggles nearly knocked me over when we hugged!!  It was great to see her again and there was Lil Mofro Ho …. 1st time meeting her and she is as cute as can be and even sweeter!  As the evening progressed, I declared that she was and is one of my new best friends!

Gregg, Doug (Mofro virgin), Giggles, LMH, and I headed down to the gazebo where we met BillyBob and his crew.  And did he indeed have the spread of snacks.  Thanks for the honeybell – even though Gregg ate it – he did say it was incredible tasting.  Skotdee arrived not too much later and this was also my first time meeting him. And he is such a sweetheart with his southern drawl and awl.  I also met Redfisherroy and his lovely wife Musiclovinmom down at the gazebo as well!  This is too much fun and the night is just beginning!!

We headed to Skp’s about 5:30 or so.  We walked down the long wooden sidewalk to get to the entrance and a couple was hanging out there and asked if I was Sunshine and it was Mama and Daddy Pilchard.  Good golly, these are some of the nicest folks you will ever meet!  And then met KellyKO, yet again, a sweetheart!  We all hung out together and had a few drinks.  Then comes along Cool Breeze …. Got a couple of pictures with him and then I went to meet his wife.  She was so welcoming and you just want to give everybody you meet a big ole hug, and that I did.

We could hear the band warming up, but the way they have it all set up, it is impossible to see them unless you are inside the ‘Skipperdome’.  But, there was the Glory Hole in the fence and I did get a shot of JJ up there on stage doing the sound check.

Chatted briefly with Skotdee while he was setting up, and I bought my first taper a Crown and Ginger!!  Made my way over to the merch table and talked with Piros (Aaron) for a bit.  And while I was up there a gal come up and we started conversing about the Mofro albums and she didn’t like it when I said something along the lines that Blackwater had  some “fillers” referring to the story JJ tells about the dude that crashes into the marked po-leece car – she proceeded to tell me that I must not be a real fan if I don’t like that album, well, I just say I let that comment she made fly right past me.  I saw the new FanSite cards DT had sent Clay and they are awesome!!!

Joswaz came up to me before the show to introduce himself, nice fella, was great to meet a new member of our board.  Soon after that I saw Got MoFro and his lovely Ashley, then came BSR*fan, Firefly, Trophy Wife ….. it was like a wave of Mofrofans (I hope I don’t forget anyone, I apologize now) coming at me, WhereUat and her brother Sean, SoFlaDave too!  Such a nice guy and a heck of a photographer!!  Was great talking with you!  I was waiting anxiously to meet Antsey Ashley as we have communicated since 2009 on the old board.  She is such a beautiful Southern Belle!  Then there’s Mr. D!!  I even ran into Estanley and Sue Webb, once again, first time meeting them in person as well.  Sue is just a cute as a button and Eric was fun to talk to as we kinda go back since the old board. Met GracyJJ after the show too!  Had a blast hanging with her in the private room as well as Get Mofro’s room.

Ok – Show details:

I loved Orange Blossoms for a show opener ….. “1   2 ….  a 1   2   3    4!!”  Got our blood pumping early!  I think this may have been the fist time I have heard Diyo Dayo live, awesome!!  Air is one of my all time favs to hear live, especially when JJ gets the crowd singing back and forth with him, great sounding!   And of course “Down at the Smokehouse” was rocking.  I bet the more I hear Georgia Warhorse live, the better it gets I swear!  Lochloosa – unbelievable that every time I hear JJ perform this song, it is sung with such emotion that just pours from his soul – amazing!  Love Beautiful World as Lil Mofro Ho, TW, Liz, Ashley, Ute and I think Giggles too, we all had our arms around each other singing together!  Gotta Know for the first encore was just incredible!!  And for the finale, I done went and got goose bumps when I heard the first couple of notes of Ho Cake!!!!!  Must say it was THEE BEST VERSION EVER!!  And with Conrad Oberg on stage, OMG!! Seen video of him, but to be able to see him up front and so close, well I was speechless!!  I can hardly wait for Skotdee’s DVD so I can relive it again and again, but I guess I can dew that when he uploads the audio show!!  Again Skotdee – you rock!!  Just wished we could have hung out after the show.  Skipper’s is an unforgettable place to see Mofro!!!

Got a chance to chat with some of the guys after the show.  This was the first time I had a chance to really chat with Trube and what a character he is!!  He is just down right funny and sweet.  I will tell you that I was truly touched when I was approaching Anthony and he greeted me by my name.  I know these guys meet and see so many many folks all over the country and for him to remember and acknowledge me by name meant a lot to me and I let him know that.  Todd, well, he is as happy and  smiley off stage as he is on stage.  Told him how thrilled I was to be able to see them in Asheville when they open for Wide Spread Panic and he is was surprised and happy as well.   The buddy I brought to the show is a huge Derek Trucks fan and was happily surprised to know that Todd Smallie was Mofro’s bass player, so I asked Todd if he wouldn’t mind meeting my friend and he was more than happy, so we walked over to Doug and Gregg and Todd hung out with them for a while.  When I approached Dennis, he greeted me with a big ole hug and asked how I was doing and I asked him to sign my setlist and he asked me “how many of my autographs do you have, like 100?”  I commented on his choice of footwear and he just laughed and proceeded to tell me that he forgot to pack any shoes for this leg of the tour, so he wore his slippers, lol!!!  Didn’t see AC, Art, or JJ.

Soon afterwards, we started to gather at the gazebo to continue the festivities.   Got Mofro had his guitar and knew all songs Mofro and other folks were singing.  Well since it was bout 2:30 am, Victor came to us to let us know that we aren’t really suppose to be out here this late, but he will put us in a private room for as long as we wanted.  So the whole entourage followed him and as we did, Got Mofro was playing Brighter Days and we awl sang along as we walked from the gazebo into the hotel, down the hall and into our room.  I just wish I would have took out my camera to video tape it, because it was just classic!!!!  We get inside the room and there is a wall hanging that had the words “Don’t Tread On Me” with the snake, to cool!  We hung out there for a while hoping all the others would see the sign we had down at the gazebo directing them to the private room.  Got Mofro played his guitar and many of us sang along, I will lip-sync as I can absolutely not sing, Mr. D can attest to that, lol!!

Sugar Snap Peas and I don’t care, ha ha!!!

It was great hanging there with Got Mofro and his wife Ashley, Mr. D, Antsey Ashley, Lil Mofro Ho, Giggles, KellyKO,  GracyJJ, Musiclovinmom, Gregg and Doug .  Chris even pop in for a minute to say hello.   We hung out in Got Mofro’s room for a while and we had a lot of fun and laughed a lot too.  Must have been about 4 am or so when many of the folks were ready to punch their pillows, but not I , I swear I did not want this night to end. So Giggles, Lil Mofro Ho, and Firefly were so kind as to let me hang out in their room for a bit more.  Gregg said I could stay out and play as long as someone would walk me back to our room and I thank you Firefly for being my escort home at 6 am.

After breakfast with TW, LMH, and Ashley we went to get our bags from Giggles’ room said our good byes.  As we were leaving the gazebo after saying good by to TW and AA, the doors to the lobby automatically opened – and as we were walking down the long hallway, I saw Gregg’s Dad on the other side of the second set of doors, and the closer I got, I was not wanting to leave my Mofro infused/induced state of mind.  How can this be happening, I was asking myself? …. As the second set of doors opened I felt as if I was waking up from an amazing dream and I had no control to be able to stay in my dream.  Very hard to mentally switch gears like that.

Two regrets: not being able to go to Ella’s for chicken and waffles with a side of chocolate covered bacon; instead dinner was prepared by someone who likes to cook but can not, at awl.  We were served boiled, yes boiled ribs and one of the sides was a heapin pile of just sliced raw while onions, what does one dew with that??!!  Second regret was not being able to attend night #2.

And in closing (haha, I can hear a bunch of y’all clappin now!) I would like to say that meeting each and everyone of you, some for the first time and some for a second or third really made this adventure so much more that going to see JJ Grey  & Mofro, it made it unforgettable and will treasure every moment I shared with you guys and I truly mean that from the bottom of my heart.  And for those of you that actually read this to the very end, Bless Your Heart!!!
