Mark and I realized this morning we forgot a song in the Auburn set-list... it was unfamiliar so we'll figure out what it was and will post it later.

(I know.)

I'm thinking, based on a comment I saw on Facebook, that what you heard and may not have know the name was Stagger Lee (aka Stacka Lee; The Great Stagger Lee, and others.)

You can thank skotdee for posting these lyrics a year or so ago.

Good luck finding them online, I've searched quite a bit to no avail. This has been a subject of interest for me, particularly as of late as I love singin the damn song so much... at any rate I've got it pretty much figured out. Heres my best stab at it. Ya'll feel free to help me out if I've got any of this wrong...

------------------------------------
In 1952 when times was hard,
I had a sawed off shotgun a marked deck of cards.
a fucked up coat and a flop down hat,
a T-model ford and I didn't own it

and incidently bout four months ago,
my wife kicked me out Im goin from, ho to ho.
I heard of a place called rampart street,
I heard thats the place where all the people meet.
I waded through water and I waded through mud,
I waded to a place called the bucket of blood,
I fell in ya'll, yes I did ya'll.

I asked the bartender for something to eat,
he gave me muddy glass of water, a stale piece of meat.
I said Mr. Bartender don't you know who I am?
frankly no I don't give a damn.
I said its me the great Stagger Lee, I heard of you from down the way.
but I whipped motherfuckers just like you,
each and every day.
a flash of lightnin the bartender was dead,
he had six holes in his motherfuckin head,
by me yeah, the great stagger lee yeah.

a woman asked wheres the bartender please,
I said down behind the counter with his mind at ease.
she said oh no my husband's not dead, I said,
count the holes in the bastards head.
she put her hands up to her face,
got a chair and looked around the place.
then she looked at me with a funny smile,
look like you ain't had cock in quite a while.
she looked at her watch it was quarter past eight,
come upstairs I'll set you straight,
yeah you yeah, Im talkin to you yeah.

we fucked on the table and she started to scream,
I said whats a matter baby, Im startin to cream.
we fucked on the table and we fucked on the floor,
and rolled down the stair and we fucked some more.
then all of a sudden it got quiet as a mouse cause,
billy the law walked in the house, he said,
who could the murder of this poor man be?
I said me yeah man, the great stagger lee.
Killin aint no sin, drinkin aint no crime,
and I'll kill a motherfucker, yes I will,
for a chicken head dime.

I thought I'd better put, billy to rest,
so I drilled four holes in his motherfuckin chest.
before his frail body hit the floor, four more law men came through the door.
the next mornin yeah bout half past ten,
I was sittin before the judge and, twelve men.
They said what could the verdict of this here man be,
friend yeah, the great stagger lee.
one of them said shoot him, the other one said give him gas,
the smart motherfucker over in the corner said send 'lectricity in his ass.

the judge said stagger lee your a friend of mine,
so 99 years huh, heres your time.
I said 99 years aint enough to make my bed, I'll do it in the corner standin, on my head.
he said so you can make your bed neat, give ya 99 more to, stand on your feet.
I said, know this, just a line of jive,
cause the great stagger lee yeah, still alive.
when you hear that rumble down under the ground,
thats stagger lee turnin, hell around, ah yeah.

stagger lee left the jail and got asked for a dime on his way home,
he said look a here fella let me tell ya, Im on the roam.
Im goin down to big mae's cafe to, get me somethin to eat,
I gotta get me a brand new pair of stetson shoes to, put on my feet.
Im back on the bricks Im gonna try it again,
if you gamble you know you can't win with me yeah, the great stagger lee yeah
---------------------------

Now this was straight from the Snatch and the Poontangs version, which is the one Mofro covers. Those lyrics might vary a little when JJ sings it. I highly recommend picking up the CD. As well as this song, there are some HILARIOUS other tunes, such as "hey shine" and for a interesting little nugget for Mofro fans, check out Big John Jeeter. You'll be pleasanly surprised. (as well as ROTFLYAO)

We scream for it at shows.  On jam cruise trophy wife bought him shots and made a sign on a napkin with "STAGGER LEE" on it.  JJ was cracking up, and played it too.  He plays a cleaned up version at all age shows, if at all.

I think one of the best Stagger Lee's I've ever heard (and seen) is the one on jam cruise.  Check out the iclips video, cut #8.
http://iclips.net/watch/jj-grey-and-mofro-01-06-2010-jam-cruise-8

(You can hear us yelling for it; buying him a mojito.  He's about 3/4 lit about this time.)

BTW, at about 11:00 into this, when JJ introduces Daryl, for those of y'all that maybe ain't seen Daryl smiling and laughing before here's your chance.
