JJ goes off on a solo run for the "WHAT IT IS!" tour featuring Mavis Staples, Booker T and JJ.  I didn't know who Mavis Staples is until looking her up and then I felt stupid.  Those of y'all who are old like me probably remember her as part of the Staples Singers back in the 70s.  I was into the 70's funk, r&b, soul sound...more apt to watch Soooouuuuuul Train than American Bandstand.  If you fall into that category then you'll recognize the songs in the videos. Good stuff.

The Staples Singers were a family group.  That's Mavis' 2 sisters on stage with her and their dad, Roebuck "Pops" Staples.  He formed the band when he saw talent at a young age in all 4 daughters. It was 1948 when Mavis was 9.  They stayed together as a band until 1994; Pops died in 2000 at 86.

WHAT IT IS!
featuring MAVIS STAPLES, BOOKER T. & JJ GREY

The gospel, rhythm & blues and deep soul of legendary icons Mavis Staples and Booker T., joined by up and coming roots artist JJ Grey come together for a beautiful, uplifting night of American music. Performing both separately and together, the artists promise a concert filled with timeless hits, heart and plenty of soul.
Mavis Staples is a Lifetime Grammy Award winner, National Heritage Fellowship award winner, five-time Blues Music Award winner, Rock And Roll Hall Of Fame inductee and one of VH1's 100 Greatest Women of Rock and Roll. With The Staple Singers and on her own, Mavis is responsible for blazing a rhythm & blues trail while never relinquishing her gospel roots. Mavis reached back to the Freedom Songs of the 60's for her latest Ry Cooder produced hit CD, "We'll Never Turn Back" and will release her first live CD "Live: Hope at the Hideout" on Nov 4, 2008.

Booker T. is a Rock & Roll Hall of Fame inductee, Musicians Hall of Fame inductee, Grammy Lifetime Achievement Award recipient and leader of the legendary Booker T. & The MG's. He has lent his trademark keyboard chops to artists as diverse as Ray Charles, Eric Clapton, and Neil Young. He has also produced classic records such as Willie Nelson's triple platinum hit "Stardust" and Bill Withers' hit "Ain't No Sunshine". Booker will release his long-awaited solo CD in the Spring of 2009 (Anti Records).

Wanna know even more on Mavis?  Okay.

Up top is Mavis Staples in the 70s.  Here, in a very moving video, is Mavis Staples AT 70.  Yeah...she's still got it.

And now for some contrast with Booker T.  Released in Aug, 1962 Green Onions hit #1 on the US R&B chart and #3 on the US Hot 100. (If you've never heard this--no matter your age--then please take me to your planet when you go back.)

Booker T. & the M.G.'s
formed: 1962, Memphis, TN
Booker T. Jones - organ, piano (b: November 12, 1944)
Steve Cropper - guitar (b: October 21, 1941)
Lewie Steiberg - bass (1962-1965) (b: September 13, 1933)
Donald "Duck" Dunn - bass (b: November 24, 1941)
Al Jackson, Jr. - drums (November 27, 1935-October 1, 1975)

INDUCTED INTO THE PEOPLE'S ROCK N ROLL HALL OF FAME

And 45 years later...

Drive By Truckers was his touring band during part of last year but I don't think they still are.

Congrats to them for being voted in to the People's Rock N Roll Hall of Fame!!!

Just noticed a good portion of the line up for the '62 MGs played Jake and Elwood's backup band in The Blues Brothers movie.

No kidding?  I sure didn't know that.  But they were just "kids" way back when. Booker T. was 18 when Green Onions was released. The other guys were probly just as young.  So yeah 20 years later.  I'll be damned...I'll have to notice that next time I watch BB.
