thanks for the flattery, but i think i'll pass. would rather just help out when i may know something.

Gotta come bigger that HPC SD. I think just east of HPC there was a camp in Fiftone. I have a buddy Mark, who actually did his dissertation on Turpentine camps from the turn of the century. He was mad about that stuff.

SO. No more STH game.

OK. I'll play, SOME, but it has to be a back and forth.
Two more questions. one hard, the other easy.

Where did JJ get his first electric guitar(pretty sure it was his first from past accounts), & what color was it?

Where did the infamous car wreck occur, and who was in the car? And when?

oh, and i miss Home Sweet Home.

Lovin' me some Mofro Trivia this morn...

I know the guitar came from Western Auto, can't remember the color. Im thinking it was red if memory serves me correctly. I loved when he would break that thing out at shows back in the day...

Not sure of the location of the wreck, but I do know it was back in 2001 and they were on their way home from a tour, and JJ's wife was in the car and suffered the worst injuries.

JJ stands for John John.

I think the first album was Gold & Platinum. His sister bought it for him.

Favorite color is purple.

Speaking of JJ's story telling, is K.D.'s nite limit or minute still open? It is the jookhouse he talks about in Baldwin Florida next to his grandparent's trailor park, I think.

K.D.'s isn't open anymore, but the building is still there. Last I heard JJ mention it, there was a daquiri type bar there now called Frozen Paradise or something to that effect.

Ah, the Bamboo Room Fiasco. The owner of the club and JJ got pissed because a bunch of people (actually a bunch of my friends...I wasn't there as I was living in Athens, Ga at the time....saw the show the night before, but had to leave the next morning) were making a bunch of noise.....one of the groups Bday party that night (the wife of a Bamboo Room employee). Both the owner and JJ told them all to "SHUT THE FUCK UP!"...although JJ later apologized in an email to the old mofro listserver. Sumpin like that anyway.

just some tropical plants that were out behind the club.

my folks had earlier that day told me they were splitting after 33 yrs. im an only child of about 33 at the time, and that night i worked some demons out b/w the music and the booze. word has it that i went missing about half way thru the second set. no one cared. i woke up all twisted among the heliconias. got myself together walked up the back stair as the encore finished.

next night i made it home, yet managed to pass out in the back yard on a wonderfully cold slab of concrete.

glory days!

the whole Fiasco thing would have been fine, if'n a few folks from the BIRTHDAY PARTY hadnt come out the next few days with all sorts of bravado saying how they felt hurt by the whole thing.

I wish you had been there stan.

for those that have been to the BBR, you'd understand if you saw a grouping of tables which accommodated this BDAY party of about 30 people. Thats almost one third of the crowd. Had the folks been there for the music, we would have never had the fiasco. But they were there to catch up and chat.

It sent off a shitstorm into the internets and email and listservs.

I remember my wife and our party telling the Pet The Cats to 'simmer down' numerous times. I doubt Skeeter actually used simmer down. Nasty looks and Bravado is all we got back.

That was a wild ride, and hell of an interesting show.

Obviously still talked about.

Here goes another: (too easy for u jimbo.)

What was the original name of the band (talking Mofro...not one of JJ/Daryl's bands beforehand)?

Chochemea played in studio. I don't think he ever toured with the band but I believe he's sat in with them before. Man plays an awesome baritone sax.

Isn't Rein Sanction the band that the boys use to cover one of thier songs? "On My Mind"? From what I understand, they were just friends or a another band that like Sunshine said played a few shows with the guys either opening or Mofro opening for them? I do recall JJ saying about On My Mind, that it was his favorite Southern Rock song and proof that Southern Rock was not gone or is still alive. Great song if any of you ever get to or want to hear another cover from the boys. It's on the Archive in just a few places, way back in 2003 or earlier.

I will say, most of, if not all of my knowledge comes from the archives and listening to them. I have pretty much every show backed up on an external hard drive (with the exception of a few of the newer ones just added) and have listened to all of them in full alteast once. That was all I use to do before this site came around.

check out Mag Fest 10/22/04 for a sweet "On My Mind", ironically with Andrew & Anthony sitting in for Scone. Didn't realize then it was a sign of things to come

yup, great thread Sunshine... Especially since it goes to prove my theory, that UHollis is officially the Man! I know he denies it, but deep down he knows, oh he knows... And to clarify, I'm talking about being the Man as in the bees knees, the cats pajamas, the wiseman when it comes to any and everything Mofro...

Skotdee, glad you brought that up, the Mag Fest recordings are great. Especially the recording with the Jax Symphony Orchestra playing with the guys. I think it's the one on the 23rd. Fireflies, Brighter Days, Lochloosa, all of the songs sound great with the orchestra twist.

There is another recording of On My Mind from the Funk Box as well, 8/17/2004.

The one skotdee is talking about the one were JJ talks about hearing that Southern Rock was gone, but to him it never went anywhere. Then, that On My Mind was the best Southern Rock song he had heard in a long time.

Sunshine.....The song "On My Mind" that DT mentioned is the link between the Gentry Brothers and Mofro to which Hollis was referring.

Clay.....Yes, Chochemea has played with them atleast once that I know of....during one of the late night shows during Langerado a few years ago (I was there). Wasn't the band called Alma Zuma before Mofro? I need to see if I can find that cd.

Yes Sunshine, both Magfest '04 shows are on the archive, SBD source taboot! And yes DT, those symphony shows were awesome. They had played the first symphony show in Jacksonville a week or so before, so a few of the symphony players came out to Live Oak for Mag Fest. They all wore Camouflage shirts, so cool!

i think mofro magic was a name right b4 mofro. IDK

question

What song off the Alma Zuma album is the only one, so far, to make it onto a MOFRO album?

here is what I came up with as all the unanswered questions:

Whats the significance of "Hercules Powder Camp" from the newsletter title?

what does JJ stand for? is it John John or John Jr. ?

How many female band members have there been in Mofro (touring members, not studio)?
Can you name her (or them)?Bea "BBQueen" Gayle - was she the only one?
What instrument did she (or they) play? drums
Bonus: when was she/they with the band? the very begining
Bonus bonus: who replaced them?
Bonus bonus bonus: are there any recordings with her/them? yes

I don't know the answer to this one. But who is "That Boy"? And or his girl? Are they fictional or based on someone JJ knew? I think Jimbo might be our best bet for an answer on this one

you said:
Gotta come bigger that HPC SD. I think just east of HPC there was a camp in Fiftone. I have a buddy Mark, who actually did his dissertation on Turpentine camps from the turn of the century. He was mad about that stuff.

what was the newsletter title? I can be slow at times and the answer may be there and I just don't see it. I guess I don't know what the Hercules Powder Camp is either....

Hey UHollis,

Do you know the full lyrics or correct lyrics to the original version of Lochloosa? From listening to it, I think I have most of it, but not sure I'm correct on a few parts. Mostly just a word or two here and there I think.

all I have is:

Homesick but it's alright,
Lochloosa is on my mind,
where the trees meet the sky

Homesick but it's alright
Homesick but it's alright
Lochloosa is on my mind... oohhh boo boo boo boo...

I see the sun again
in the T? going down
when the sun goes down on me
??? around town ???

I swear it's 10,000 degrees in the heat
or the sea to sea?
Lord, burnin, burning up on me

I was born in a lonely ???
So like whatcha know
When you know whatcha say
Ain't never gonna be the same

and now I pray, the Blackwater rolls,
From a Florida Bay, all the way
To Lochloosa I knowwwwwwwwwwwwwwww oooohhhhhhh

But it’s alright, Lochloosa is on my mind
She’s on my mind
Homesick but it’s alright
Lochloosa is on my mind…

Let’s go to Florida ya’ll

(and thus starts Florida)

DT.....the original lyrics to Lochloosa are what you hear on the cd. The words you've written down are the beginnings of what was to become the song we all know today. I take it you were listening to the 5/23/01 show on you tube when you wrote down these words, correct? I listened to it and then listened to a recording of the following night (5/24/01, same venue, Boulevard Cafe, Chicago, Il) and the lyrics are almost completely different....and only about a quarter of the words.

I faintly recall the bus or I guess it was a winnebago they use to drive on tour, breaking down somewhere in the eastern midwest. Not sure about brakes, but knowing UHollis, he is probably right. For some reason I keep thinking outside of St. Louis and when it happened, JJ was extremely tired from doing everything he was doing (booking, managing, playing, designing merchandise, you name it, basically not getting any sleep at all) and he pretty much decided that was that for Mofro and they were done? Can't remember when, I think it was around Lochloosa album release or a little before. I could be way off on that. And I don't know why he decided to keep going, but I do have it in mind for the next time I get a chance to talk to him to bring it up. Especially after the west coast tour cancellation just recently and the way the economy is halting thier extensive touring.

What was the name of the record label which signed JJ/Daryl and led them to move to England to record? Who (name) was the agent who did so and why did it not work out to the point where JJ and Daryl were just playing gigs here an there to make ends meet (as Mofro Magic) before coming back to the US?

You two done gone and stumped each other and yourselves? And UHollis wasn't right about the brakes and New York break down? Or maybe he is and Jimbo and Stan both confused each other into thinking he's not... interesting..

Jimbo, what you are thinking of, did it have to do with something on tour to the same nature of a break down/troubles traveling or are you talking about something different where the band neared a catastrophy some other way?

Stan, you can answer the questions that I asked, was just throwing them out there to add to the information Sunshine has been accumulating. Figured those were all important tidbits for our little quest for Mofro knowledge we have going here.

I don't know the answer to this one, but always wondered and I'm sure one of you guys know. After the accident, I remember hearing that there were some friends/bands who had some charity shows or events to help everyone involved with the medical bills until they were back to 100%. Any idea of who or what bands were a part of that?

Hey Jimbo, something a little of the topic of this thread, but figured you wouldn't miss it if posted on here. Can you give us any insight into the progress of Daryl's new material, is it looking like a possibility he will release an album? If so, is it gonna be distributed in a way that a lost Kansas boy like me out in Arizona can get a copy? I'm digging "A Mountain" from his MySpace. It's been stuck in my head now since I first heard it and I spend all day at work humming and singing it while I'm wandering around aimlessly... Your boy has been holding out on us! Should be a crime hiding those grooves from us and acting all non chalant up there playing with JJ and Mofro...

Guess I should have known that being out here in AZ where that probably happened. Can easily see it though, the heat out here rips up tires all the time. Our highways are littered blown/shredded tires, especially in the summer. Smart of them to bend the gas line and keep it going. When was that Jimbo, summer of 2001? I know they went through the Rhythm Room early on, not sure if that was the same part of the tour you are talking about. And did it happen in AZ or California? Don't think the would have went through Nevada then.

The car crash in Florida didn't happen to far from then huh?

And thanks for the info on Daryl, I appreciate it. I'll keep an eye out for new stuff on his MySpace page and can't wait to hear the rest of his album. Congrats to you as well, must be an quite an exciting time for you and the family!

hmmm, well, Im not 100% sure that's the road he's talking about in the above pic, but its on the Westside, and intersects with Normandy Blvd, so I just always assumed it was the one... I did wonder about the spelling, but figured the song title was just a slang spelling. Hell, it might not be the road at all for all I know, now Im second guessing. Certainly coincidental if not...

Before JJ & DARYL left for Europe,DARYL had already
laid out the Music for this song, with very few words,
one being Fouracre, which is a road close to home that
he traveled quite often, after arriving in Europe, JJ
started putting words together with DARYL's music
& reworking FOURACRE to LAZY FO ACRE ,Therefore
no real significance except a popular rd. traveled
frequently by JJ & DARYL & They both contributed to this beautiful song.

OK, here are the answers to your question, DT:

1) Record Label: Acid Jazz Records

2) Agent: Dave Robinson

3) Didn't work out: Because the record label was in a legal battle which caused them to void the contract with the band.

Actually Stan I found it, its on the Archive! However, its archived in the Robert Walter's 20th Congress Directory. Apparently he uploaded both the RW20C & mofro shows as one. To further complicate the matter, they are in .shn format. Man, haven't seen that format in a while. Like a damn 8-track or something... At any rate, I will pull these down (just the mofro set), convert to flac, and re-up in the JJGM directory.

What a kick ass thread this is! Not only have we learned a ton of Mofro history, but it has unearthed a few rare recordings as well! Speaking of that, I receive the Power Jam in the mail yesterday, THANKS JIMBO! I'll get that ripped and seeded this weekend. All you whipper snappers who think flac files are the bees knees, what with yer ipods and what not... Well, back in the day we had shn files. And ya know what, they weren't taggable, or even seekable. And ya had to get hip to an ftp site to even get them, and you better hope you could get a slot within a month or so to even grab what ya wanted. Wasnt any of this bit torrent crap. 1/2 hour downloads. Please, I remember leaving my computer runnin for 3 days to get one show. And before that? Hell, we had to use the MAIL. Thats right, US Postal Service, slow as hell, bubble mailers and case logic double sleeves. Looked forward to the first day of each month for B&P day on rec.music.phish or gdead or gdlive or nugs.net... Hopin like hell we could get included in a tree, or a vine, or a even a leaf. Keepin our trade list updated with all the shows, rules and the likes. Discs must ONLY be burned disc-at-once. Tryin to remove the gaps when slackers burned using TAO. And whats this talk of discs? Hell I remember buying brick after brick of maxell XLII cassette tapes. Don't send me no stinkin regular bias crap or no sorry ass TDK's! Turn off the Dolby noise reduction! That crap sucked. Do you know how many dual cassette decks I went through. The nakamichi dragon. 1st generation straight off the master DAT Braaah. But wait, is this a master or a 1st gen? 5th gen hissy nightmares, sounded like somebody wiped their ASS with the tape, and we LIKED it!

Jeesh, don't know how lucky you got it.

Matter of fact that whole show is just freekin rediculous, sounds like JJ had been hittin the sauce and is LIT up lord have mercy on fire. Nice up Stan, I don't know where you got half these old school nuggets but damn sure glad you've shared them.

And yeah Gator, that Redneck Prophet article, along with the Freebird show from 7/27, what started it all for me. That was published in our local entertainment rag here in Jax, Folio Weekly. I still have at least one copy and swore I had more, still lookin for those extras ya'll...

Clay, you just need to rename this the All-Knowing Mofro thread of knowledge, The Mofroly Grail, Lost arc of Mofrovenant, or something, you get my drift This thing is just epic. And I have a feelin we aint done yet.

Air was inspired by Wile E. Coyote and other cartoons; when they went off the cliff and they looked momentarily like they were walking on air. I've heard him tell that a couple times but I don't know/remember if he said much more than that.

Sunny: that would be "Wrong Side"

Finally! I have something to contribute to this incredible thread.

About Dew Drops, yes it's about someone JJ knew or knew about. His father beats him and when he does the boy imagines being in a place where he's "walking on dew drops..." Then he gets old enuf to leave home, stays in touch with his mother but can't shake the memories of his father. I think.

Not compared to all them's above me. I'm in awe.

Dollars to doughnuts means 'most certain' or 'most assuredly'. It comes from the idea of betting. Betting a dollar to a half-dollar, for instance, means that you're giving 2 to 1 odds--you're willing to risk a dollar to win only a half-dollar. Being willing to bet dollars against doughnuts (viewed as worthless) means that you're totally confident that you're right, so confident that you'll bet money against nothing.

The expression is also found in a number of variants, including dollars to buttons, dollars to dumplings, and dollars to cobwebs, each of these objects being considered worthless.

"Dollars to doughnuts as an adjectival or adverbial phrase is first found in the late nineteenth century in America. The first explicit reference to betting is not found until the 1920s, in a story by "Ellery Queen"--"I'll bet dollars to doughnuts Field played the stock market or the horses"--but betting is unquestionably the origin of the expression."

ok, what is FN JOCKS? I am assuming that FN is Faith Nation........

JIMBO, I have tried the bit torture thing at work, (cuz my puter at home can't handle it) and I was told that doing the bit torrent thing is not a safe practice at work - meaning people can access our files, etc.

Sunshine, you are right with the Faith Nation Jocks. Check out the Mofro Merch Ideas thread for further clarification. Jimbo is on a roll as usual.

As for Dew Drops, everything said about it is correct, a few things to add were that the kid was a good friend of JJ's and from what I remember the kid was quite poor. Lived in a shed or shack or something like that and tried his best to keep it from everyone, was embarrassed about it. I think the kid kinda stuck up for JJ or they had each others back all the time when he was young. The Father did beat the kid and the mother was not around at the time, for what reason I don't know. Then at a young age, the kid and his father left town or dissappeared and JJ wrote the song about him while on tour with BB King and Jeff Beck. I'm pretty sure the kid didn't go to school either, but will post when I find the archive song where he talks about it in detail.

Hey Hey! Wondering if we could talk a little this week about Gal Youngin'... First, wouldn't it be nice to hear this one again? Another tune I would love to see work back in the rotation.

Anybody know the story behind this one? I know its about JJ's grandma, but Im not sure of the details...

I think I have an idea of where he got the name from at least. John Dude & Jess visited the Yearling Restaurant at Cross Creek this weekend and sent me this lil' nugget

Hey there Bigdog and welcome!  To my knowledge his full name is John Grey Higginbotham.  His middle name is his maternal ancestral name, yes.  "Jeffrey" is a new one on me--I don't think that is correct.  I don't think anyone has definitively answered whether "JJ" stands for "John John" or "John Jr".  It is established that that's what his granny called him, eventually morphing into JJ.

Ah! Bulldog...indeed.  Cool (as a Gator fan I have to admit I like Bigdog better.)

I'm surprised that in 2 years the name hasn't come up before.  I didn't know it myself for a long time.  And believe me it's not something JJ tries to hide.  He, as you can imagine, is very proud of his family heritage.  But he's also very protective of his family and their privacy.  He's a true Southern Gentleman, and as such his family comes first.  He comes from a long line of men who would put themselves between any situation and their family.

And that's not to mention that the Grey family name is equally important to him as the Higginbotham family name.

I agree with that Clay, he is truly a family first kinda guy.I was and still am very impressed with his grace and kindness to his fans. Never had a bad experience with him or any MOFRO members. Which is really saying something these days, and it is just another reason that I am so into this band. You feel like old friends or even family when you go see them and he remembers you and the last show you were at.Truly amazing...we can't wait to see the band again.

a 3 part question......

1 - what album has the song not originally written & recoreded by JJ? name the song and album

2 - who originally recorded that song?

3 - and as a bonus question, what club did JJ hear it in?

Stan, You got the first two right, but I don't think the last one is K-D's.  I don't know what the place is called, but I'm pretty sure he heard it at a diner in Alabama somewhere when he was on tour and decided he wanted to cover it.  I'll see if I can find the exact name of it.  Don't recall it off hand.

There was mention of bumping this thread up. So I did.

For those who haven't read this before, put on some Mofro, select one of your favorite cold beverages, and sit back and relish in some significant JJ and Mofro knowledge of past and present.

The format is a little funky, btw. The first 75% of it is a cut and paste from the old board (so it ain't got the pencil quote thing and all that).
