On Fire (with the Bonerama 'bones)

Ah yes, a music festival in the "new" Colorado: the Gates of Weed are opened wide, but don't even think of smuggling a bag of Cheetos into the arena!  A great day of music capped off by a rollicking 85 minute-or-so set by the guys in front of several thousand revellers that remained.

Earlier, Lionel Young Band, Harper and Carolyn Wonderland all played fine sets on the main stage, with Harper on digeridoo creating a particularly haunting When the Levee Breaks.   Then the heat went from warm to blast furnace, as Bonerama just splattered the back walls of the rodeo stadium with nuclear doses of sound.  Must have been the thin Colorado air that made those trombones so damn powerful, but it was just insanely great.  And covers of Whipping Post and When the Levee Breaks (can't ever ever ever remember hearing that live twice in the same day), the crowd just went nuts.  The bar was set quite high.  John Mayall didn't disappoint either.

Then it was Mofro's turn.  Great, great energy from the crowd and back to the crowd.  JJ was totally in his element fronting the band, which really sounded good in the rodeo stadium.  Colorado crowds may be second only to Florida crowds for familiarity with the band and bringing the noise right back.  The band was sharp, continuing to add nuance to the arrangements and the solos.  The crowd was quite familiar with the new stuff.  Warhorse was just nasty, and the crowd ate up every note of Lochloosa.  Everything kept building and building for a really raucous 99 Shades.  For the finale, JJ brought out the 3 trombone players from Bonerama, resulting in the nastiest wall of sound I've yet heard for On Fire.  Absolutely indescribable.  The three bones, Art and Dennis (with JJ sticking a couple in), kept trading and trading and trading and trading, building to a deafening conclusion, which had the crowd going total mad-cow.

And if that ain't enough, the Fat Tires are so fresh, you gotta slap em.  Gotta go.  Heading back to the cornfields in only a few more hours.
