The newly elected officails in florida have lost their minds. They are proposing to close (or even sell to private owners!) 53 state parks. Several places on the list are some of JJ's favorites. (Devils Millhopper, Olustee Battlefield,  Marjorie Kinnan Rawlings Homestead, etc.)

What are we going to do about it?

I just heard about this.  So depressing.  I hope someone can turn it around.  I'm going to check out that facebook page, RiverRat.

Thanks for the update Dave.

We've (the Snook Foundation) been keeping an eye on this one, as well as SB 744 that was introduced by Joe Negron. That bill would eliminate fishing license fees in Florida. At first, it sounds like a nice idea, but millions of those dollars are earmarked for things such as conservation, law enforcement on the water, etc. Plus, we would lose Federal matching funds, so in all we'd be out almost $50 mil. And finally there are federal laws that say we must register somewhere, and our state license covers that. Without the license, we'd have to get a federal license anyhow. It's a lose-lose, and probably just as dead in the water as the park closings, but it ain't dead yet.

For what it's worth, Negron isn't a bad guy, I think he just floated a bad bill here without thinking it all the way through. I think he'll be an ally on some conservation politics coming down the pipe, but I hope his bill is squished this time.
