Hi all, this is the longest I think I we have gone without a post. I miss all the chatter! Hope everyone is well! I know we have talked about this before but I would like to get serious. Is it possible that all of us fans could get together and pay for a private concert with JJ & the boys? I have been playing the Brighter Days DVD and the music means so much to me as I know it does you. I can't even begin to explain what happened to me when I first heard that voice and those words! It was like someone touched my soul where a darkness had been and light came in! I would think with many fans as are on here we could do it! Please, let's make a serious effort to make this a reality if we can! I will do whatever is needed to make this dream a reality!

And when I speak of a darkness it's not some weird thing, I just mean musically and lyrically, just don't want anyone to get the wrong idea

Of course I am sure there are liability and insurance issues but I hope there is a way. It could be an appreciation concert to let them know how much the music means to us! A night of giving back.

We could do that... I believe that someone had researched the cost at one point before, but can't remember who or how much it was. The biggest problem, in my opinion, would be location. Do we try to book a club for a private party, which then increases costs, unless someone has a venue of their own to use. And then would be the logistics of travel for members to attend. It would definitely have to be something that was planned out and booked a while in advance to ensure that people can make it.
Personally, I'd suggest the Varsity Theater in Minneapolis... and no, not just because it's closest to me. It's at least somewhat centrally located, being in the Midwest, and can be rented out for private events such as a show like that. There's also plenty of hotel space nearby, and a major airport, so flights may not be as expensive.  And since that's where the boys generally play when they come to town, maybe the Varsity would book them to play the night before or after, and we could get a doubleheader.... who knows?
I like the idea, but it would take someone who is very organized and will want to take on the responsibility of the booking, paying the band, etc. to pull it off.

Hey Slick, I would be more than happy to get it all together. I know there would be lots to do but I am determined. First we have to have serious support from the fans. They have to really want this too. Second JJ's camp has to be contacted to see if they would even go for it.....then it's all just making this happen!!! I have a special project I thought of to give to JJ and the guys. It would involve all the fans, I think it would be so cool! Let's see what others have to say!

I love the idea!  When this topic was discussed before (w/another MF), we were thinking that the fans should definitely be willing to pay a higher price for a "ticket" since it would be such a unique experience, say about $100 or so each?  Then, there would need to be a commitment from enough people to get the ball officially rolling.  I'm not sure that I could commit to a trip to the midwest, though, and I would prefer FL since it has direct ties to MOFRO, but that's even further for most people, so timing and location may be the hardest compromise for such a variety of fans...

No problem on throwing out ideas, AllGrey. I know it was discussed before, but the logistics could be a nightmare. I definitely wouldn't recommend scheduling it during the winter if it is in Minneapolis... it can be brutal in MN  from Nov - March.
That said, MISPHOTOGRAPHER - I agree, Florida would be like a special place. Jacksonville especially. But with us scattered all around the country (world for that matter), I'd think somehwere central would be better. Maybe St. Louis, Minneapolis, Indy, Kansas City, somewhere like that. Easier to bring people to the middle  than to a coast. Especially for those living on the West coast.
As far as price goes, yes, I do believe that we had discussed a premium "ticket" price for those attending because of the special nature of the show. That much I think most people would do, especially if there was some kind of meet & greet tpe of deal with it. Guaranteed to hang out, take pics, etc. That;s another reason I suggested the Varsity, to be honest. They do weddings and corporate banquets there as well as live music shows. So they'd be able to do some sort of "Evening with JJ Grey & Mofro" thingy.
First things first though... who all would be in for something like this? And for how much? If it's a show, I'd say $100 might be enough to get enough people to do it. Dinner and show, maybe $150?

Well, so far not much response from anyone on this board. We would need to know first I guess, if the band would do such a thing, and approximate cost of booking the band. Then it may be more of a reality to everyone. I will try to make contact regarding this. Keep ya posted! Thanks again!!!

Hey guys!  I remember looking into this over a year ago.
I believe the cost (to Our Boys) was roughly $5,000 plus travel expenses
(not sure how much that would be to rent The Bus, etc).
Even if it runs $7,000, and 50 of us committed, it would be $140 a pop,
so worth the money, and if 100 committed, only $70.

As far as a location, the cost of renting may determine that as well.
I personally like the idea of my backyard and including a BBQ feast,
giving it a laid back casual atmosphere.
Although I don't know how the bus would get down my
single lane road into my holler, lol!!

Sorry I didn't respond earlier.  I haven't frequented The Front Porch a whole lot lately, as it seems not many people have been swinging by for a visit lately.
I miss that .............

I think an outdoor venue may be cheaper to rent or if someone had piece of
property to accommodate us, large enough for folks to set up tents and camp,
that may help some folks with expenses, plus it will give our Misphotographer a
chance to try out her new hammock!! [biggrin]

If it was close enough to my area, I would tinker with the idea of
dewin the BBQ idea, maybe $12 bucks a head
for a keeler spread of vittles.

til next time ...................

If only I had access to my computer rather than this silly phone, I'd have LOTS to say!!! I've done a lot of research and actually wanted to do this for my birthday, which just passed. Unfortunately, I didn't have the money to put up front to spearhead this sort of thing. My current job situation wouldn't allow even entertaining the idea, although I did actually ask for a LOAN for my birthday - ha ha! My final estimate was closer to $10,000, but that's probably because I factored in a lot of additional costs.

I had even looked into doing a solo show, which would be MUCH cheaper, but I honestly don't want to go that route.

Ohhhh this is getting better and better! I thought I read something way back when that to have the guys perform it would be $20,000.00....I am so excited for this. I love the outdoor idea but this is our one shot, what if it rains??? It would be great outdoors though so people could camp. More to come, everyone keep your " bright ideas " cap on!!!

Kim...thanks for reaching out about this but I am not sure this is a concept we are interested in pursuing at this time.

Body: Hello Jesse,
My name is Kim McAfee. I am a huge fan of JJ Grey and Mofro. I would like to know how to book JJG&M for a JJ Grey fansite concert. I of course would need to know the actual booking fees and what else would be required of me to book them. I don't have many details yet as I am just starting to put out feelers to all involved. I know we need a venue and that too is still being kicked around. The fansite has talked about this for sometime and I want to make it a reality. I also want this to be a "night of giving back" to show our appreciation for the music. As you know, many fans see the music as more than just hearing a groove, they hear their life stories in those songs. I have a special project I am putting together and would like to present to JJ from the fans.

Please let me know any info you can as soon as you can. I appreciate your help.

Kind regards,

Kim

The above email is what I have received back from JJ's manager. Sorry I could not figure out how to get this before the reply. Guess the concert will not happen after all. I am surprised to say the least!

Long story short (y'all are saved again by me only having my phone from which to respond - ha ha!), I've had a couple of dealings with Jesse, both through email and in person, and it took me a while to get used to his demeanor. He actually is pretty nice once you get to know him (took me some time!). Thanks for reaching out to him. Even though we didn't get quite the response we were looking for, at least the bug has been put in his ear. Maybe once he has more time to think it through he will end up giving it serious consideration. Also, who knows what he's hearing from JJ's end. As in, maybe JJ is the one who wouldn't even consider it (for now). Hmm... I just wish I could "run into" Jesse at a show in the sometime very near future.

Keep putting those positive thoughts/vibes out there. It WILL happen one day [smile]

Well... with what Jesse said, I don't take it as a negative, necessarily. One thing to remember, in the music business, $$$$ talks. If things were actually set up, e.g. - venue, date(s) available, and money paid up front, I'd be willing to be that a show would be possible. With the band scheduling out so far in advance for festivals, shows, etc., the logistics would be the big thing.

I do like Sunshine's idea of an outdoor venue... again, I suggest the familiar and suggest one of the Indian casino's here in MN... I'd be willing to bet that a place like Grand Casino (which has an AWESOME outdoor ampitheatre) or Fortune Bay (way up north, but on a beautiful lake... ) would be able to help pull it off. It would also have rooms for everyone, and other entertainment if you like to try your luck at the tables. But I digress... there are plenty of those casinos throughout the country. Maybe that would be possible...

Otherwise, if someone has a nice farm (maybe an older one that isn't as active anymore) where people could camp, the bus could park, etc., and a barn with an open hayloft, someone could set something up. I'd say we could use my family's farm, but the barn needs some roof and upper floor work to make anything like that remotely possible... and I don't have the extra $10k to get it done any time soon. Besides, the skeeters in Northern MN would carry half of you Southerners away. [wink]

Anyway..like I said, I don't see the response as a flat no way.... more of a "not right now". Maybe JJ is worried about getting into a "private performance" type of rut. I know that some of the '80's bands got stuck in that... I saw Huey Lewis & the News that way... Corporate event. Huey was nice enough to hang out and talk to people. I overheard him say that this was the type of gig they'd been getting for a couple years. But I honestly think if the $ was put up, venue confirmed, etc., that might just be enough to swing the no to a yes.

Hey Slick, hope you are right. I am not giving up that is for sure. I can understand the rut thing but this would prob be a one time very special event for the fans on this forum! I hope we continue to throw this idea around until it becomes a reality. I have some great ideas for the concert and I know you and others do too. Let's keep this rollin! Thanks for your encouraging words Slick!
